New Spitalfields Market, East London
Countrystyle provides all on-site services at Europe’s largest wholesale fruit and vegetable market, New Spitalfields in East London for The City of London Corporation. Countrystyle began working with The City of London in 2010 and was re-awarded the contract in 2017 until 2022 for full on-site waste management.
Key to the reaward of this contract was Countrystyle’s success in the segregation and recycling of core waste streams arising from the activities at the market, including wood, pallets for reuse, plastics (rigid produce trays, strapping, polystyrene and pallet wrap), general waste, cardboard and organics.
Site cleanliness, health & safety and the principles of “waste polluter pays” are key drivers which contributed to New Spitalfields being awarded Best Wholesale Market 2013 and 2018.
Bexley Thames Road and Footscray
Bexley is one of the leading London boroughs for recycling and has held this position for over 13 years running. Countrystyle was awarded a five-year contract in 2018, including complete on-site management for Bexley’s two Reuse and Recycling Centres (RRC’s) and Transfer Station at Thames Road and Foots Cray. The main objective for the borough is to drive segregation, increase rebates, lower costs and educate the public about recycling and reuse. Both sites enable the public to recycle a variety of waste streams including paper and cardboard, wood, green waste, hard-core, electrical goods and bulky waste such as mattresses.
The Thames Road Transfer Station accepts a wide range of materials from household kerbside collections, street cleansing and local trade/commercial businesses. Countrystyle is responsible for training and upskilling staff and introducing incentives to increase the reuse capabilities and recycling rates. This includes the supply and maintenance of bespoke mobile plant enabling operators to maximise recovery and recycling in a controlled and safe working environment.
BUCKINGHAMSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL’S HIGH HEAVENS WASTE COMPLEX
Buckinghamshire County Council (BCC) initially needed a waste management company that could offer a complete waste management solution for the treatment of green / food waste following the closure of the in-vessel composting facility at its High Heavens site. Countrystyle has successfully worked with BCC since 2013 and seeing an increased demand for the effective management of bulky waste streams such as mattresses and carpets, investment was needed on site to process these difficult waste streams for recovery.
Countrystyle and BCC successfully trialled and installed a new Arjes VZ950DK shredder. The procurement of the shredder enabled bulky waste to be processed into an RDF fuel providing BCC with significant transportation cost savings.
DS Smith Kemsley Paper Mill
The Paper Division of DS Smith operates across Europe and North America and supplies packaging for its customers with the high quality finished papers needed for manufacturing processes. It’s Sittingbourne based Kemsley Paper Mill has an annual production capacity of around 825,000 tonnes and is the second largest recovered fibre-based paper operation in Europe.
Working in partnership, DS Smith and Countrystyle developed the Reject Processing Centre (RPC) to establish a processing plant within Kemsley Mill that is capable of processing specific paper mill reject streams e.g.: ragger ropes. Since its installation in 2014, Countrystyle has successfully processed through the RPC circa 60,000 tonnes of light rejects and ragger ropes per annum recovering approximately 10,000 tonnes of fibre per annum for reintroduction into paper production at Kemsley Mill.
