What are the benefits of recycling food waste?

Diverting food waste from landfill for recycling provides numerous financial and environmental benefits.

Reduced Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Decomposing food waste in landfill produces methane, a harmful greenhouse gas and a major contributor to climate change. Diverting food from landfill helps to reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions.

Generation of electricity and heat at AD facilities: Anaerobic digestion (AD) plants produce green energy from biodegradable waste. These plants break down organic matter in the absence of oxygen which causes a microbial digestion process that produces biogas, which is a mix of methane and carbon dioxide and is captured to produce heat and energy. This valuable gas provides a sustainable energy source and reduces reliance on fossil fuels.

Although methane is generated during biogas production, it doesn’t escape into the environment: Instead, it is burned as a fuel in a controlled process that converts it into CO2 and water vapour.

Reduces Waste Disposal Costs: Landfill tax is a charge imposed on waste disposal at landfill sites. Sending your food waste for recycling is much more cost-effective, better for the environment and will save your business money.

Resource Recovery: Recycled food can be used as a valuable resource for the manufacture of quality organic agricultural digestate and compost. While waste coffee grounds can be recycled to produce a range of sustainable products such as coffee eco-fuel.

Prevents cross contamination of recyclables: Separating food from other recyclable waste types prevents waste stream contamination. When dry mixed recyclables become contaminated they become less valuable and can even become unusable. Contaminated waste decreases recycling efficiency and increases disposal costs.

Commercial Food Waste Collection

As experienced waste specialists, we provide commercial bin hire and regular food waste collection services.

With exclusive access to AD plants and an expansive network of agricultural outlets and logistical capabilities, we can process large amounts of food waste, turning it into renewable energy and digestate. We also have access to a large commercial in-vessel composting site for the processing of compostable packaging and a coffee grounds processing plant for coffee waste. As a result, we are perfectly placed to deliver total waste management solutions for food waste disposal.

Whether you’re a school, hospital, care home, manufacturer, shop, restaurant, supermarket, hotel or anything in between, we provide professional waste management solutions to suit your sector.

Commercial Food Waste Bins

We deliver and collect a range of commercial food waste bins to small and large business customers across Kent, London and the South East.

Our bins size ranges are 240 and 360 litres to suit the needs of your business. Easy to move, they are suitable for internal or external use. We also offer lockable recycling bins to prevent odours, pests, and to enhance security. Smaller bins for coffee grounds are available, enabling this waste stream to be collected separately and processed at our coffee recycling plant.

We will organise a free food waste management audit to help us understand your waste collection needs. At Countrystyle, we know how important it is to dispose of food safely. Our services are tailored around your specific business needs and waste volumes.

What Happens to Food Waste?

Generating Energy from Waste.

All food waste collected by Countrystyle (except coffee grounds) is taken to an anaerobic digestion (AD) plant where it is used to generate green energy.

What Happens to the Coffee Grounds?

We accept waste coffee grounds from businesses large and small across the UK.

Whether you’re the owner of a bustling café or a large retail centre generating a significant amount of coffee waste, we can arrange convenient options for collection or delivery.

Waste coffee grounds are taken to our coffee processing plant. Here we initiate a thorough & meticulous cleaning process eliminating impurities and contaminants (any non-organic matter) to ensure only the purest grounds move forward in the production cycle. After cleaning the coffee grounds, we work closely with partners to maximise the value and potential of the coffee grounds. These partnerships allow us to create a range of sustainable products in the circular economy such as coffee eco-fuel and the development of bio-fertilisers for viticulture, horticulture and agriculture applications.
