Reuse in Action: Bexley’s Community Shop

Share

Reuse sits at the heart of a truly circular economy. By keeping items in use for longer, we reduce overconsumption, cut waste, and give everyday goods the chance to find a new home and a new purpose.

The partnership between Countrystyle and the London Borough of Bexley is one built on growth and collaboration, continually opening doors to new opportunities. One opportunity to emerge from this relationship is the Reuse Shop at Foots Cray Reuse and Recycling Centre, a place where residents can donate items they no longer need, and others can find quality goods at affordable prices.

Since opening in December, the shop has already made a remarkable impact. Over 2,963 items have come through its doors — equivalent to around 181 tonnes of material that would otherwise have gone to waste.

The shop has been opened in memory of June Unwin, a much-loved colleague who dedicated 27 years to Bexley’s Waste & Recycling Service. June passed away in February 2024 and is remembered fondly. A commemorative plaque was unveiled at the opening of the shop by Cllr Baroness Teresa O’Neill, with former colleagues, Bexley’s Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods Councillor Richard Diment and Councillor June Slaughter also in attendance to mark the occasion.

The Reuse Shop is open to everyone: Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday & Sunday, 9am – 4pm Foots Cray Reuse and Recycling Centre
