Helping The Fresh Produce Centre Achieve Zero Landfill

How Countrystyle delivered a tailored waste solution for one of the UK’s largest fresh produce suppliers.

The Challenge

The Fresh Produce Centre, part of the Fresca Group, is one of the UK’s largest suppliers of fresh fruits, salads and vegetables, sourcing from over 60 countries worldwide. Products are either delivered directly to customers or ripened, selected and packaged for daily delivery from their facilities in Paddock Wood, Kent and Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire.

Countrystyle began working with The Fresh Produce Centre in 2006 to help improve their green credentials and align with sustainability expectations from their own customers.

With 11 different waste streams and a fast-paced operation, The Fresh Produce Centre needed a solution that was simple, efficient and supported their goal of reducing landfill.

The Solution

Countrystyle carried out a full waste audit to understand the site’s requirements and designed a system that worked both day-to-day and long term.

Key steps included:

  • Installing containers throughout the main packhouse to keep operations tidy and ensure proper segregation

  • Adding clear signage to guide staff on correct waste separation

  • Collecting fruit and vegetable waste for treatment at an Anaerobic Digestion plant, where it is processed into biogas for power and heat

Value Delivered

Within four years, The Fresh Produce Centre achieved a landfill diversion rate of 99.8%, and by 2011, they reached 100% landfill diversion, meeting the sustainability goal they set when partnering with Countrystyle.

This case study shows how a tailored, practical approach can deliver outstanding results and help businesses meet their environmental commitments.
