Sponsored by Countrystyle Recycling, the ‘Battle of Medway’ was deemed a huge success.

With Kent at the heart of the company, Countrystyle engaged with it’s roots, celebrating the Battle of Medway which commemorates the 350th anniversary of ‘The Dutch Raid’ or known as ‘Tocht naar Chatham’ in Holland.

Remembered as one of the greatest disasters in England’s naval history, in June 1667 the River Medway was engulfed in flames as the Dutch fleet sailed up the River Medway and caught the English unprepared. This daring invasion brought the Second Anglo-Dutch War to an end.

Hosting two weeks of exciting Dutch themed events, some of the festival highlights included: joint performances from the Royal Marines and Dutch Marine Band, two flotillas of ships and family friendly re-enactments. There was also a variety of exhibitions surrounding the story of the Dutch Raid, from international collections at the Dockyard to new exhibitions at Upnor Castle.

Aptly named ‘Medway in Flames’, the event closed with a fantastic day of music and water-based entertainment topped off by the large firework display and film played on the river Medway.

Commenting on the sponsorship, Sales and Marketing Manager, Sonya Cragg said: ‘Countrystyle is proud to serve Kent and sponsoring this event meant so much to us as a company, acknowledging its roots. The company handles a large proportion of waste in the county and enforces a strong landfill avoidance ethos. We hope through this sponsorship, we can continue to work with the community and businesses, reducing their impact on the environment and keeping Kent green’.
